A conference of scholars focuses on Future of up country Tamils

Future of up country Tamils in Sri Lanka will be discussed at a Conference at ICES Auditorium in Colombo on August 2-3. It is organised by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies. The theme of the conference is 'Up-Country Tamils: Charting a New Future'.



Keynote Speeches will be made on Wednesday 02 by Prof. Tudor Silva, Dr. Daniel Bass, Cornell University and several other scholars on Charting Uncertain Futures: Diaspora, Citizenship and Belonging among Up-country Tamils Migration towards the North-East and the Emerging Political Leadership of Hill Country Tamils.

On Thursday 03 Dr. Kumari Jayawardena, Dr. A. S. Chandrabose, Department of Social Studies - OUSL Prof. M. Mayilvaganan, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and several experts will deliver lectures on the History and Politics of the Upcountry Tamils (Title TBC,) The Oppression and the Need for Reemergence of the Indian Tamil Plantation Community of Sri Lanka Intentionally Ignored? India and the Up-country Tamils of Sri Lanka.

This conference will bring together representatives from organizations working with Up-country Tamils, researchers on Up-country Tamils in Sri Lanka, including historians, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, and political scientists,representatives from Central, Provincial and Local government, and representatives of the private sector and civil society organizations to approach opportunities and challenges facing this community from multiple disciplinary perspectives.(LI NEWS)
