He made this observation yesterday, at a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Head Office in Colombo.
Questioned by the Media, Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said that the President had not changed his stance of remaining in the position for only one term as he promised during the election period.
“However the Central Committee is of the opinion that he is the most suitable person who can win the trust of all communities at the next presidential election”, Minister Jayasekara said. “The President as the chairman of the SLFP has to listen to the Central Committee and he does so unlike in the past.” He also added that the President Sirisena summoned all the extremist groups of the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim Communities and listened to them. “Earlier this did not happen ” Minister Jayasekara said adding that the President was not a dictator.”
Jayasekera said that the government took measures to abolish the Executive Presidency. A motion was moved in Parliament.However the Supreme Courtt decided when the Bill was challenged, that a referendum is required for this . “However if it isn’t to be abolished in the future, the Central Committee of the SLFP is of the view that President Sirisena is the most suitable candidate to stand as the candidate at the next Presidential election, from the SLFP.”
Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa and Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Fiszer Musthapa also spoke. (Daily News)
