Minister plunders forest for votes

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Charles Nirmalanathan has regretted that a minister was destroying the flora and fauna in the Mullaitivu district to make new settlements in order to strengthen his vote bank.

He was speaking during a mass protest in Mullaitivu against the setting up of new settlements by destroying the forest cover in the region.

GMOA claims Rajitha hampered solution

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) claimed that Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne had prevented a solution being found to the issues relating to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

GMOA General Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said the GMOA had informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe about the conduct of Minister Senaratne and its impact on solving issues related to SAITM.

The Bill on the Local Government(LG) Elections would be presented in Parliament next week since all the affairs by the government with regard to the election is completed, President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said.

He also said that although various politicians and sections of the media level allegations that the government is not holding the elections, what really has happened is that the Bill which was drafted on the election of members to the Local Government institutions previously had many flaws.

Temples damaged in Uma Oya Project

The Ministry of Education has instructed the Director General of the Archeology Department, Professor Prashantha Bandula Mandawala to investigate reports that 21 temples, some with great historic value, in Bandarawela, Ella......and Welimada have been damaged owing to the construction of the controversial Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project.
