Coronavirus: EU demands UK-made AstraZeneca vaccine doses.


The EU has urged pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca to supply it with more doses of its Covid-19 vaccine from UK plants, amid a row over shortages.
The company has infuriated the bloc by saying it can deliver only a fraction of the doses it promised for the first quarter of the year.
It blames production issues at European plants, but the EU says doses made elsewhere should make up the shortfall.

Apple sales have hit another record, as families loaded up on the firm's latest phones, laptops and gadgets during the Christmas period.
Sales in the last three months of 2020 hit more than $111bn (£81bn) - up 21% from the prior year.

** Tanzania president raises doubts over COVID vaccines
President John Magufuli claims, without evidence, that vaccines against COVID-19 are ‘dangerous’.
Tanzanian President John Magufuli has claimed that vaccinations against COVID-19 are dangerous and instead urged Tanzanians to protect themselves from the deadly disease by using domestic measures including steam inhalation.

Magufuli has long downplayed the seriousness of COVID-19, which has killed more than 2.1 million people worldwide. He has previously questioned the efficacy of imported COVID tests and urged people to pray to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

** Why do so few people in France want to take the COVID-19 vaccine?
It's what some have called a "French paradox": a country with historically high medicine consumption has notably low confidence in vaccines, a trend that has sparked concern in the early days of the COVID-19 vaccination rollout.
