The first official discussion between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), in a bid to form a broad alliance against the UNP -led Government, was held yesterday (14), with both Parties claiming that the discussion was ‘fruitful and successful’.

General Secretary, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, his predecessor Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa and MP Thilanga Sumathipala represented the SLFP while SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris, Dr. Jagath Wellawatte and MP Dullas Alahapperuma represented the SLPP.

Following the meeting, which was held at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo, Jayasekara told the media that the first day’s discussions were based on setting up the policies of the broad alliance and other basic yet crucial areas.

“The discussions were fruitful and successful and went smoothly as we planned. We, basically, discussed policy matters and took into consideration certain remarks made by each committee appointed to look into the salient areas in forming this broad alliance. Since, this was successful, we decided to immediately meet on 21 March for the next round of discussions,” he added.

Meanwhile, MP Alahapperuma said the need of a broad alliance against the UNP was felt as the exit of SLFP Members from the Government appeared to have not made a tangible impact on the Government.

He also denied rumours that the formation of the alliance was delayed or stagnated due to the conflict of ideas with regard to the leadership of the alliance. “There is no such thing and in fact there was nothing discussed in this regard. We are currently focussing on the policy matters and things like deciding the leader of the alliance, its name and the symbol may be discussed at a later stage,” he added.
