Katunayake and Mattala International airports eye schedule flights

Sri Lanka’s aviation sector is struggling for survival now before the resumption of normal operations in Katunayake and Mattala International airports”, official sources said.

New mitigation measures are being introduced in all five international airports specially at Katunayake and Mattala International airports with respect to cleanliness, hygiene and social distancing as well as Covid screening procedures

Sri Lanka’s underutilized Mattala Airport has heightened activity amid a Coronavirus crisis with over 50 flights in the past two months and is eying scheduled flights in the post-Covid era, the airport agency said.

Shutdown prevailed in the country has had a significant adverse impact on passenger traffic at BIA during the first and second quarters in 2020 due to reduced flight numbers caused by the suspension of air services by regulatory authorities in Sri Lanka and around the world .

Drafted profit before tax of AASL up to 30th April 2020 is Rs. 1,415 million which is a 76 percent reduction compared with a profit of Rs. 5,940 million recorded in the period of 2019, Finance Ministry data showed.

A package of promotional and relief measures including waive off of embarkation levy percentage and new land and parking charges have been introduced by the treasury.

.The Mattala airport had been handling ship crew changes and repatriation flights, which had raised the activity levels of the airport, which has had hardly any scheduled flights before the crisis.

Indigo Airlines had flown ATR72 and Airbus A320 aircraft into Mattala 20 times during June 26 to July 31.

In June and July 2020, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport had handled more than 50 flights involving 2,188 passengers.
