Seven SL professionals appointed as Port City Economic Commission members Featured

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today (May 31) has appointed seven members members to the Colombo Port City Economic Commission

President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana has been appointed as the Chairman of the Commission.

The new Colombo Port City Economic Commission act empowers the President—beginning with incumbent Gotabaya Rajapaksa—to nominate five of seven members to the Commission, to the complete exclusion of the ‘collective responsibility’ of the Cabinet and/or Parliament.

Tthe President also has the power to sack any member or members unilaterally and replace them (with more malleable individuals.

This creates doubt among the public that foreigners especially Chinese professionals could be appointed as members of the commission.

Clearing these public doubts, the president has appointed seven local professionals as members of the new commission, official sources said. .

The Commissioncomprised S. R. Attygalle - Secretary to the Treasury,Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama - Secretary to the Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage,Saliya Wickramasooriya - Former Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka,Kushan Kodithuwakku - Chairman and Managing Director of Orel Corporation, Gerard George Ondaatjie - Managing Director of Mercantile Investment & Finance and Rohan de Silva - Chairman and Managing Director of McLarens Gr.

Theses appointments were made in the wake of India’s recent statement that it is keeping an eye on the China-backed Colombo Port City project in Sri Lanka that is being touted as a big ticket investment drawing scheme which would boost the island nation’s economy.

The project has been in the works for a while but this week, the Sri Lankan parliament approved the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill after a two-day debate on it. The Opposition parties in Sri Lanka are against the bill which they say will lead to the creation of a Chinese colony in Sri Lanka
