Women’s T20 Challenge: Trailblazers Survive Harmanpreet Kaur’s Assault, Win By 2 Runs

The first match of Women’s T20 Challenge between Supernovas and Trailblazers was nothing short of a thriller. With 19 runs needed off the last over, Harmanpreet Kaur gave Supernovas a scare with three boundaries in the over. However, she could not finish it off. Veteran Jhulan Goswami held on to her nerves with 3 runs needed off the last ball as Supernovas won the match by 2 runs.

Toss: Supernovas won the toss and elected to field first.

First innings: The first innings was all about Mandhana. After the early wicket of Suzie Bates, the Trailblazers skipper steadied the ship with Harleen Deol stitching a partnership of 119 for the second wicket. Supernovas bowlers did not bowl many loose deliveries in the powerplay as they conceded just 25 runs. In 10 overs, Trailblazers scored 52 runs, the duo started to accelerate halfway through the innings.

As Deol took a backseat, Mandhana took on the bowlers. Towards the end, Trailblazers lost wickets cheaply but Mandhana took them to a score of 140 for 5 in 20 overs. She scored 90 runs off 67 deliveries including 10 fours and 3 sixes. Radha Yadav took 2 wickets whereas Anupa Patil and Sophie Devine took one each. Patil was economical with just 12 runs in her four-over spell.

Second innings: Similar to Trailblazers, Supernovas lost their first wicket early on in the innings. Sri Lankan batter Chamari Athapaththu and Jemimah Rodrigues tried to rebuild the innings. But Windies Shakera Selman put an end to Rodrigues’ innings with a spectacular direct hit in 8th over. The two shared 49 runs for the second wicket. In the 11th over Athapaththu lost her wicket in the 11th over. Rajeshwari Gayakwad was handy with two wickets in middle overs.

Supernovas skipper tried to keep the run chase alive with a boost from Sophie Devine, who targetted the spinners and took the aerial route. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers for Trailblazers. The left-arm spinner took 2 wickets for just 11 runs in her 4 overs.

Game Changer: Ecclestone bowled a brilliant penultimate over to get rid of Devine leaving 17 runs for Goswami to defend.
