President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday promised to discuss with the Mass Media Minister and Cabinet Ministers about the needs of journalists and to form a committee to strengthen the professional rights of journalists on a legal basis.

President Sirisena also said that he would request the committee to meet once a month to discuss about the proposals forwarded by journalists and continue brief him on the progress of its work.

The President pointed out the importance of channeling correct news to people while saying that he has neither harassed nor impeded the work of journalists in anyway.

“Journalists play a pivotal role in both the government and private media, whether they carry out their duties as staff or regional correspondents. Media institutes should provide the necessary facilities for their journalists, whether they demand them or not,”President Sirisena said.(Daily News)
