According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 19% of vegetables and 21% of fruits are destroyed in transportation in Sri Lanka annually.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that information has been received that due to not following the proper transportation arrangements, they are being destroyed.

Accordingly, it has been revealed that about 221,955 metric tons of vegetables and 290,151 metric tons of fruits are destroyed in transportation annually.

The Minister mentioned that post-harvest damage in Sri Lanka is at a very high level and the country loses nearly 40 percent of the harvest due to post-harvest damage.

Considering the amount of food wasted in Sri Lanka in 2021, it has been revealed in a discussion held by the Minister of Agriculture with several university professors on food security that it is enough to feed another 10 million people.
