Sri Lanka Reverses Spice Import Ban, Allows Re-Export Featured

Import of the spices will be allowed for the purpose of re-export with a minimum of Domestic Value Addition (DVA) of 35%.

According to the extraordinary gazette issued, the import of powedered or unground pepper will be allowed.

The import of powdered or unground nutmeg, including dewormed and punky, has also been allowed.

According to the gazette, cardamom, ginger, saffron, thyme, bay leaf, curry and other spices can also be imported for re-export.The import of dry turmeric has also been allowed.

A gazette was issued prohibiting the importation of the spices from January 1 last year.However, according to a proposal submitted to the Cabinet on December 6, the Ministry of Investment Promotion has given permission to import the spices for re-export
