The ballots for the election of the successor president will be destroyed

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced to Parliament today (04) that the ballot papers used in the secret ballot held on 20.07.2022 to elect the successor president were destroyed.

The Speaker also informed the Parliament that the ballot papers were destroyed by the Secretary General of the Parliament in accordance with the provisions of Section 18 of the Election of the President (Special Provisions) Act No. 2 of 1981 and with the approval of the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs held on 24.03.2023.
