Businessman arrested with gemstones worth Rs. 8 million at BIA Featured

A passenger who attempted to smuggle undeclared gemstones worth around Rs. 08 million out fo the country has been arrested by officers of the Sri Lanka Customs’ Narcotics Control Unit at the departure terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

The arrested passenger, a 53-year-old businessman from Galle, had arrived at the airport last night to board a flight to Bangkok, Thailand

The gemstones worth around Rs. 08 million were found carefully concealed in the luggage of the suspect.

Following the formal customs inquiry, the gemstones were ordered confiscation and the businessman was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 01 million.
